Smooth Travel: Things to Consider and Remember

It’s almost travel season and we are sure you are already planning for yourmuch-expected holiday trip (like, why would you read this if you’re not right?). We at Laagsuroyatbp would like to help you have a great travel experience. So, be sure to remember this few tips.

For the flight

  • Be sure to check-in online on your flight the night before your travel date. Most airlines require passengers to check-in at least four hours before the flight but doing it the night before the flight surely wouldn’t hurt.
  • Always be early (set that alarm clock right)! Come in an hour earlier than your flight to avoid being late. If you’re leaving early in the morning, better to have your breakfast at the airport or just have it after the flight. You know, just to be sure you make it on time but that’s totally up to you. Also, avoid rush hour at all times.

 For your baggage

  • Be sure to weigh your baggage at home to avoid delays. If you have a check-in baggage, be sure to only put the unnecessary things in it. Keep all important belongings like wallet, cellular phones and camera on a carry-on bag (because travelling without a camera is like not travelling at all).
  • Anything liquid is not allowed inside the plane (like perfumes and stuff). You can put it in your check-in baggage but, if you don’t one, leave it.
  • If your baggage weighs close to the carry-on weight limit, best add-on a check-in baggage on your flight back just to make sure you have enough space for yourpasalubong (souvenir in English).

For the tour

  • It is highly suggested that you google tourist spots in the area if you are not familiar with the place where you are going.
  • There will surely be a lot of tour packages available in the area once you get there but it is better if you already have them arranged by your travel agency before leaving. This also helps you from getting ripped-off or scammed (things people do for money).

For yourbudget

  • We suggest you allocate your money for the following:

Δ Food

Δ Pasalubong (Souvenirs)

Δ Fares (Plane, bus, taxi or even tricycle)

Δ Fun & Adventure

Δ Emergency (best if you have a CC)

 

It comes highly recommended that you lay-out an itinerary for your everyday activity so you won’t be like “What are we gonna do today?” and you friend goes “I don’t know”. It would totally help you save time.

Diner Review: Big Tom’s Charbroiled Burgers

The tender and juicy patty, the melted cheese or the overall taste, just a few qualities we like about burgers.  Restaurant owners have come-up with different gimmicks in making their burgers. Be it the size, the way it’s cooked or the price, we want to try them all even just once. This may be cause by western influence or they just really taste good, either way, burgers have already made its name for the modern Pinoy.

I don’t recall it so clearly but one day we were around Fuente area and we hailed a taxi going to IT Park. The driver took alternate routes to avoid heavy traffic along Escario. As he was making his exit from the small road in between Penong’s Restaurant and Ninoy’s Payag, we saw a sign that says “Big Tom’s Charbroiled Burgers”. We were intrigued by what “Charbroiled” meant so we decided to check the place out.

We have learned that Big Tom’s Charbroiled Burgers has been in Cebu for over 2 years. Their style of making their patties is they grill it on a rack over charcoal. Aside from burgers, they also offer a long list of menu as shown on the picture below.

They claim that their patties are freshly ground, never frozen and are handmade daily. Hmmm… Sounds so promising!

Inside the place is a very simplistic interior. Given that the place is somewhat hidden, there are not much people around making the place very quiet. There were 10-15 tables in the place so going there with your squad would not be a problem.

We were surprised by their speedy service. After giving our orders we just talked a little, snapped a few photos and uploaded it online (thanks to the free Wi-Fi) and our orders were already served.

We ordered DELUXE CHEESEBURGER (the one at the back) and DELUXE BACON CHEESEBURGER. Upon ordering a burger, you will be asked either to have it with 4 oz. of patty or with 6 oz. The photo above shows the burgers with 6 oz. of patty. All of their deluxe burgers come with a side of fries but drinks are sold separately. Prices are shown on the photo of the menu way above.

We were a bit disappointed with how their burgers tasted. It was like the patty does not have any taste at all, like they did not marinate it or something. Also, they shove the knife through the center of the burger and, of course, you cannot eat it with the knife in the center so, when I tried pulling the knife out, the insides started to fall off a little bit. They could have just used a toothpick like what is commonly done with clubhouse sandwiches. We also observed the quality of the buns used. Good buns should be able to hold the burger juices while one devours them. In this case, their burger buns were too soft and cottony in texture. The burger buns disintergrates to merely a crumb with just a slice of knife through it. It does not have the chewy bite we all loved from our burgers. Its sad to think that we did not enjoy our burgers as much as expected it to be. I was not able to give it agood bite, as I was saving myself the possibilty of spilling patty juices all over me if I did such. And to add up to our already dismayed expectations, the small serving of fries clearly did not give justice to the price of the burger with its proportions. It looked like a joke!

We would like to clarify that we only tried their burgers. We did not try any of their other menus. We are looking forward for improvements in this diner.

The Porter Marina Fun Fishing and Grill House Experience

As proven time and time again, it is always wonderful when your passion becomes your career and establishing your own fishing and grilling house with your friends is one of them.

Sports Fishing is growing in popularity now here in the Philippines, especially in Subic Bay and Siargao. Here in Cebu, we already have many fishing houses that brings us the thrill of dangling the bait, releasing the line and wait for the fishes to come to their peaceful demise. One of these is Porter Marina Fun Fishing and Grill House. As always, we at Laagsuroyatbp can’t help but explore the place.

Porter Marina, located at Calero, Liloan, Cebu is a good 30 – 45 minutes travel time from Cebu IT Park. If you love fishing, sports, the sea and want to relax, or discover a new hobby, Porter Marina is the best place to be. The place is serene and peaceful. Its a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Upon arrival, one can’t help but notice the beautiful view of the sea. Unlike other fishing houses, with artificial ponds or artificial lakes, Porter Marina’s ponds use fresh sea water. This rendered their fishes not having that mud-like after taste. You can guarantee that it’s fresh and clean. During our visit at Porter Marina, we learned a lot about fishing. Different baits were used for different fishes. Example, if you want to catch fresh creamy Bangus, dough (like in a pizza) would be enough as bait. But for something bigger like Lapu-Lapu, you would need a small fish to lure it to your hook.

Entrance is Php 100.00, with free use of hook and line with bait, and grilling. Their fish prices were also very pocket friendly, and given that its freshly caught, you really can say that its all worth it.

You may bring your freshly caught fishes to your home or have them cooked at the Grill house. You just have to pay an additional Php 80.00 – Php 150.00, depending on what dish you would like to have it cooked. Porter Marina Grill house also have a billiard table that you can play with alone or with friends while waiting for your food.

Since it is our first time at Porter Marina, we satisfy our taste-buds and tummies with their seafood favorites. Fried Kitong, Buttered Talaba with Toasted Garlic, Tinolang Tangigue, and Lato. Its absolutely delectable in every bite! We also tried some of their Filipino Dishes, Pancit Sotanghon Guisado and Pork Belly and it’s a two thumbs up.

A group of three Fishing Enthusiast Friends who dubbed themselves as the BAD Anglers were behind Porter Marina Fun Fishing and Grillhouse. BAD from their first name’s initials. But hey, they ain’t bad anglers at all! Their long list of sports fishing competition joined can prove that. Their love for fishing and need to indulged with their passion at one’s leisure lead them to took over Port Marina from its previous owner three years ago. Their wives and partner, (who were best friends since high school) helped them with managing the business.
